Cougar Womens BB Team Get Top Seed In Canada West

The University of Regina's women's basketball team rode a huge second half to a 74-59 road win over Saskatchewan on Friday night, a victory that locks up the No. 1 seed in the Canada West postseason for the Cougars.

It was a low-scoring first half as the Huskies took a 29-28 lead into the break, but the Cougars opened up the first double-digit lead for either team in the third quarter and put the game away in the fourth. Regina went on an 11-0 run in just two minutes early in the final period, turning a nine-point contest into a 20-point lead with just six minutes to go.

"I thought we had an outstanding second half tonight," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "One of the keys to the game for us was to get more shot attempts than them, and we did that. The last three quarters we did a good job of keeping them off the offensive glass, which allowed us to get out and run – and that's our strength."

Kyanna Giles again paced the Cougars in scoring. The second-year guard had seven points at the half, but exploded for 15 in the second half to help Regina pull away.

The win improves Regina's conference record to 18-1, gives the U of R its 13th consecutive victory, and assures the Cougars home court for the entire postseason – including the 2018 U SPORTS Championship, which they'll host at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport in early March.

Besides Giles – who also had seven steals, six rebounds, and five assists in addition to her game-high 22 points – the Cougars also got 12 points off the bench from Carolina Goncalves and 10 points apiece from starters Kyia Giles and Sara Hubenig.

Correct me if I am wrong Scruffy, but this means if the Cougars win their remaining home games this year they will be national champs!
