University of Regina To Conduct Independent Review of Athletics Program

Harold Riemer, dean of the University of Regina’s Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies, announced Tuesday that an independent team will be commissioned this fall to perform a comprehensive review of the school’s interuniversity athletics program.

The review team will consist of four individuals, no fewer than half of whom will be external to the U of R. Results of the comprehensive analysis and recommendations for action are expected to be released by the end of the calendar year.

Taking on a key role with the review will be longtime women’s volleyball head coach Melanie Sanford, who will step away from coaching for the 2016-17 season. Sanford will work on guiding the coordination, planning, and execution of the review.

“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Melanie’s calibre right here in Athletics that was willing to take on this role as we enter a pivotal time for the Faculty,” Riemer said. “Her leadership will be invaluable to us as we prepare for a review that will play a major role in helping shape our future direction.”

This will mark the second time that Athletics has commissioned a full review of the program. The department also had a review in 2004, just a few years after the program expanded to its current offering of 16 intervarsity teams.

Sanford’s term position as a coach on special assignment is effective immediately and will end next April, after which she’ll return to coach the women’s volleyball program. Besides helping guide the review, her duties this year will also include working as a co-director of the Athlete Health and Performance unit, providing oversight and support for the department as it prepares to host the 2017 Canada West Track & Field Championships and the 2018 CIS Women’s Basketball Championship, and sitting as a member on the leadership team for the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies.

A search for a women’s volleyball interim coach for next season has already commenced.

You might want to find a way to get some resources to the mens hockey team so Todd Johnson can compete with other schools by getting some talented players in here and not SJHL guys who are inadequate.

Making the Rams change their name to Cougars is a must too.

Is this a reason Dick White's replacemement has not been hired. How long does it take?

There are some sports at the U of R which have been perennial cellar-dwellers. The volleyball teams are a disaster. Perhaps they need to be removed from the roster. Yes, that would be a tough pill to swallow, but the reality is good players aren't coming to Regina because the program isn't good. Cut your losses. I would also put mens hockey on notice as well because the end result isn't there.

Didn't this happen at the U of S a few years ago? What happened there.
