Poll Overwhelmingly States Approval for "Redskins" nickname from American Indians

Nine in 10 Native Americans say they are not offended by the Washington Redskins name, according to a new Washington Post poll that shows how few ordinary Indians have been persuaded by a national movement to change the football team’s moniker.

The survey of 504 people across every state and the District reveals that the minds of Native Americans have remained unchanged since a 2004 poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found the same result. Responses to The Post’s questions about the issue were broadly consistent regardless of age, income, education, political party or proximity to reservations.

Among the Native Americans reached over a five-month period ending in April, more than 7 in 10 said they did not feel the word “Redskin” was disrespectful to Indians. An even higher number — 8 in 10 — said they would not be offended if a non-native called them that name.

Your headline is misleading. The poll wasn't whether or not they approve of it, they merely weren't offended by it. There is a difference. I know it's nitpicking, but someone with your background should know better.

Being indifferent about something, and approving it are different things.

I guess this ends the debate. At least it should!

Well actually anon 1, if someone says something to me and I am not offended by it, chances are I approve it. Thanks for playing the game though.

Good, end of this debate once and for all. The American Native Indians overwhelmingly aren't offended by it, so case closed. If the Canadian aboriginals are, it doesn't matter, this is a USA issue.

Article not blog author Mitchell Blair/Regina headline.

Washington Post article.
Sorry Bubba, "504 Native Americans" polled accross every State and District? Huh? Not a credible poll.

The survey of 504 people? Every state and district? Survey null and void.
