John Chick and Weston Dressler Released by Riders

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today international defensive end John Chick and international receiver Weston Dressler have been released by the team.

“Decisions like these are never easy but we felt it was necessary in order for us to move forward and better position ourselves as a football team,” stated Roughriders vice president of football operations, general manager and head coach, Chris Jones. “We spoke with each player and their respective agents at length in an attempt to negotiate more cap friendly contracts but unfortunately could not reach satisfactory agreements.”

Chick spent six seasons with the Riders after originally joining the team in 2007. After winning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2009, Chick embarked on a three year NFL career. He returned to the Green and White in 2013 where he spent the next three seasons. Chick ranks fourth in Riders all-time quarterback sacks with 53. He is a two-time Grey Cup champion having won in 2007 and 2013.

Dressler joined the Riders in 2008 and went on to win the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie award. Through eight seasons Dressler surpassed the 1,000 yard receiving mark five times. He sits third in Riders all-time receiving yards with 7,797 and fifth in all-time receiving touchdowns with 50. He won his first career Grey Cup in 2013.

“We want to thank John and Weston for all that they have done for the Roughriders and the province of Saskatchewan,” added Jones. “We wish them both the best of luck.”

Age and salary made these guys expendable. They are not the first popular Riders to go and they won't be the last. Thanks for what you did J and W. A spot in Plaza will await you.

I'm stunned! I heard the show today and I can't argue with what was said as far as this being done. I am still stunned though.

Great show today!!

If Weston ends up in Winnipeg with Smith, I may vomit.

What a terrible day to be a Rider fan!

What a bunch of losers on this board. You can't have a better team than 3-15 if you can't get better players at all positions. The mess Tamn/O'Day left the team in with all the back loaded contracts is deplorable. Considering O'Day negotiated most of them. A good reason why he is where he is. You fools want a better team but you have no idea what needs to be done. Chick and Dressler will likely end up playing for less elsewhere. They are just ego maniacs like a lot of others and no more attached or valued to the Riders than many before him. They will play in sewers like Winnipeg for the same money offered here. There is no loyalty. Much like Fantuz and Butler who left for Hamilton haven't won a Grey Cup since they left.

You win with defence and we had the worst in the league that some apparently were quite happy with. The defence this year will be great and this team will be a contender by the end of the season. If your not moving forward in football, you're falling behind. Finally we have talented people running this who have big enough balls to do the dirty work. The work that clearly most here wouldn't have the guts to do. They were born mediocre.
