Gibsons Finest CFL POM For July

TORONTO -- Ricky Ray, Odell Willis, Justin Medlock and Jerome Messam were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Month for July, the Canadian Football League announced today.




The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.



Gibson’s Finest CFL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH

QB – Ricky Ray – Edmonton Eskimos

Edmonton Eskimos’ quarterback Ricky Ray has been named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Month. Through the first month of the season, Ray completed 102 of 152 pass attempts and leads the league in completion percentage (67.1) and passing yards with 1,492.



The veteran QB has thrown 10 touchdowns, just one shy of his total for the entire 2010 season. Ray has only thrown one interception in five games and has rushed for 94 yards on 12 carries. With Ray at the helm, the Esks remain undefeated this season, and are first place in the West Division. The Esks have not started a season with five-straight wins since 1980.





Gibson’s Finest CFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE MONTH

DE – Odell Willis – Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ defensive end Odell Willis is July’s Gibson’s Finest CFL Defensive Player of the Month. Willis leads the league with seven sacks, has had two multi-sack games and has registered 11 tackles and one special teams tackle.



Willis is in his third season with the Bombers and has registered 62 tackles and 28 sacks in his four-year CFL career. Willis’s success has contributed to the Blue Bombers’ first-place ranking in the East Division with a 4-1 start.





Gibson’s Finest CFL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE MONTH

P/K – Justin Medlock - Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ punter and kicker Justin Medlock has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Month. In his first five games, Medlock has registered 32 punts for 1,342 yards (41.9 average, long of 64 ) and one single.



Medlock is ranked fourth in the league in kicking points with 52, connecting on 12 of 14 field goal attempts (85.7%) and all 13 converts. His field goal average of 35.8 yards is the second highest in the league, with his longest coming from 55 yards.



Medlock has also registered three singles and has contributed 52 points to the Ticats’ 132 total points this season. This is Medlock’s first season with the Ticats.





Gibson’s Finest CFL CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE MONTH

RB – Jerome Messam – Edmonton Eskimos

Edmonton Eskimos’ running back Jerome Messam has been named Gibson’s Finest CFL Canadian Player of the Month. Registering 274 yards on 55 carries, Messam is ranked fourth in the league in rushing yards. His longest carry is 32 yards.



He also registered four receptions for 30 yards. Messam scored two touchdowns during the month of July. This is Messam’s first season with the Eskimos after being acquired from the BC Lions during training camp.
