Teubert Is An Oiler

Colton Teubert and Jordan Eberle may be teammates again one day. They are now in the same organization. The Kings trade Teubert, a 1st rounder this year and a 2nd rounder next to Edmonton for Dustin Penner in one of the few trades announced on deadline day.

Stuck In the Maritimes

Amber Holland can't get home. The Regina rink that won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts last night with a thrilling last rock win over Team Canada is stuck on the East Coast where weather is posing a major problem.

They may not get back until Wednesday and they probably won't be together when they do touch down on Regina soil. Somehow I don't think they mind.

Omarr Morgan Released

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have released import defensive back Omarr Morgan.

“We thank Omarr for his years of service to the team and the tremendous leadership he provided on the field and in the locker room,” stated Vice-President of Football Operations Ken Miller. “We will miss his day-to-day contributions and wish him all the best.”

The veteran has spent a decade with the Green and White and played in 174 regular season games. In that time he has amassed 556 defensive tackles, 36 special teams tackles, 26 interceptions for 399 yards and 10 fumble recoveries.

*The Roughriders also announced they released defensive back Willie Byrd from the roster

Move Over JJ, There's A New Curling Queen In Town

What a nailbiter that was! I don't think all of Saskatchewan was tuned in to TSN the way we would be for a Rider game, but I know more people in Saskatchewan watched the finals of the Scotties than watched the Oscars, and I also know they saw a more entertaining product.

What a game it was. It came right down to the end. It didn't look like it would to start off when Jennifer Jones grabbed three in the first end, but Amber Holland's rink did not quit and when she made a dandy for three in six, I think you could hear an eruption or two across the Saskatchewan prairie. However, that was nothing compared to the 10th end---an end that came down to the last stone of the game thrown by Team Canada.

In the end, Jennifer Jones blew it. She thought she had it. Kaitlyn Lawes thought she had it. I thought she had it. TSN thought she had it. I even think Amber thought she had it as she had a look of disbelief cross her face as the magnitude of the moment sank in. I also have to wonder (and I am no curling expert) why Jones didn't come down to Holland's last rock and tap it back for the win instead of going for what I thought was the more difficult shot. Coming down to Amber's rock wouldn't have been an easy shot either, but I thought that was the one she should go with.

Now I wish the Worlds was men and women together. I'm guessing organizers of the Worlds in Regina are wishing that too.

Look out Denmark---here comes Holland. Send the Amber Alert out now!

I wonder what Pat Simmons is thinking now?

What film won the best Oscar? Do I really care?

Excitement Galore At The U of R

In my post yesterday, I told you that you should go out and watch the Cougar womens basketball team because they are great to watch and you get full entertainment for your dollar. If you were there last night, you know why. The Cougars and the Victoria Vikes hooked up in what was as Ed Whalen would call it "a ring-a-ding-dong dandy". The two teams went back and forth at one another with 21 lead changes before Regina finally prevailed by a score of 70-67 to take the series in two straight.
----
I'm guessing most, if not all of the province's curling community will be gathered around their TV to watch the Scotties final. Amber Holland will play Jennifer Jones for all the marbles, and I have to think Jones is favoured just because of her past experience at this event. That being said, Amber has had success against Jones and if she is up 5-2 this time like she was Friday, she won't lose. If you didn't see yesterday's game against Ontario, Holland was at the top of her game as she made some huge shots.
-----
Can someone please explain to me why they are having a bronze medal game at the Scotties? Is this a TSN thing or is this a curling thing or what? I thought the loser of the semi-final was 3rd meaning Ontario this year because they lost to Team Saskatchewan, but no. Nova Scotia gets a chance to somehow come back and finish 3rd. Its a little redundant if you ask me.
------
Kudos to CTV Regina. Lee Jones tells me the station is sending Chris Hodges to Scotland for the World Junior Curling Championships which will have a distinct Saskatchewan flavour with both Trish Paulsen and Braeden Moskowy from Saskatoon and Regina representing Canada. Here's hoping Amber wins today so Lee or Chris can head to Denmark for the world womens championship. On a down note though, I was also told TSN may not be doing the finals of the juniors because it conflicts with the Brier. That sucks!
-----
If Leader-Post sportswriters Rob Vanstone and Murray McCormick are on Twitter, then why isn't the esteemed Ian Hamilton.
-----
Jon Fitch beat BJ Penn as far as I'm concerned last night.
-----
Is there anyone that has done to their chest hair what UFC fighter Brian Ebersole did with his. If you watched last night's extravaganza from Australia, you know what I'm talking about. If you know me and you watched the event last night, you will also know that those last two guys that fought (Hunt and Tuchscherer) make me look like a fitness model. That was just gross to watch. The line by Joe Rogan in that fight though when Tuchscherer was cut was pure gold. Tuchscherer saying there is something in his eye to which Rogan replies ---yeah, its your eyelid. (Tuchscherer had suffered a nasty cut leaving the skin to droop into Tuchscherer's sight.)
------
This just in----baseball's pre-season is underway and the Kansas City Royals have been mathematically eliminated from pennant contention.
-----
If the L-A Kings trade Brayden Schenn, they are nuts. Then again, one of the rumours I'm hearing is L-A wants Ales Hemsky from Edmonton which the Oil are willing to do if Schenn comes back. As an Oiler fan, cmon Dean Lombardi--pull the trigger on that deal. I'm not holding my breath.

Cougar Track Team Wins Canwest Title

For the 2nd year in a row, the U of R track team captured the Canada West championship in Winnipeg today. Congrats to Bruce McCannel and his athletes

Its Not Over Yet

When Amber Holland made a great in off to make it 5-2 after five ends of play, I thought Team Saskatchewan was on the way to the finals. Oops! Jennifer Jones showed why her rink are the queens of Canadian curling as they fought back to win 10-9. The win puts the Winnipeg foursome into their 4th straight Canadian final. Will she play Holland again? I would think so, but Ontario's Rachel Homan and Nova Scotia's Heather Smith-Dacey aren't in the playoffs for a reason. After a great start, Team Saskatchewan has fizzled somewhat down the stretch. I think everyone in Saskatchewan will be pulling for a Holland-Jones final.
----
The Flames are tied for the last playoff spot in the West? The Leafs are on the verge of a playoff spot in the East? If that doesn't tell you that there's something wrong with the NHL again, what does?
----
Have the Pats petitioned the WHL to play Swift Current three or four more times this season. Regina remained perfect against their provincial rivals with a win Friday night. They are now three points out of the playoffs. They have a big one against Brandon tonight

Is Two and a Half men really over? What happened between Charlie and Rose? What becomes of Alan? What becomes of Jake? I really do believe they should make one last episode and have Charlie run off with a character played by Lindsay Lohan.

The person who commented on the coach of the year story saying if Jim Barker can win the award at 9-9 then Danny Barrett should have won is bang on! I'm sorry, but just because Toronto gained a measure of respectability doesn't mean Barker should have been named coach of the year. This just makes the travesty even greater last year when Ken Miller was snubbed in favour of Marc Trestman. I don't know if Ken did the coaching job last year that he did in 09, but I'd have voted him ahead of Barker any day of the week.

TSN is going to do 7 of the 8 CFL pre-season games. Get ready for ugly football---at least in those first four games.
-----
The SJHL playoffs have started. You can find complete game reports at www.sjhl.ca
----
A good job by GX94's Craig Stein on getting an SJHL broadcaster poll together. Its an entertaining read. A link to Craig's blog can be found on this site. Check it out. Craig is one of many good broadcasters in the SJ. I think those in the Yorkton/Melville area will agree.
-----
Regina, you really should go out and enjoy some U of R Cougar action. It was shameful to see the CKHS sitting nearly empty Friday night as the womens basketball team (the marquee program on campus if you ask me) take on Victoria in a quarter-final matchup. The Cougar womens basketball team has been one of the best teams in this country for years and they really do deserve your support. Show it tonight for Game 2 of the 3 game set against U Vic. By the way, why aren't the U of R students going to these games?

I'm torn between a Cobalt and a Focus when it comes to getting a new ride. Anyone out there have one of those vehicles? Can you give me a report on it? How about a Fusion?

As is always the case, I hope BJ Penn gets smoked tonight.

Have a good weekend. Stay warm!!

Barker Is CFL COY (Not In My Books)

I wholeheartedly admit to being biased, but after being robbed of the title last year, I thought Ken Miller was more than deserving to win the honor of CFL coach of the year this year. Those that vote though have decided on Jim Barker. Here's the story from CFL.ca
-----

The Toronto Argonauts' Jim Barker is the Canadian Football League's Coach of the Year for 2010, it was announced today.

"In leading a turnaround season for the Argos, Jim Barker displayed the fire of a master motivator, the smarts of a skilled strategist, and the courage to make bold moves," said CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon.

"He is a deserving recipient of one of our league's highest honours."

Barker led the Argos to a 9-9 record and a place in the CFL playoffs in 2010.

The Double Blue were just one win away from a berth in the 98th Grey Cup, reversing the fortunes of a team that had a combined record of 7-29 in the previous two seasons.

Barker accepted the award in an emotional ceremony that was attended by his 81-year-old mother, who flew in from California, and included a tribute from Argo receiver Jeremaine Copeland, who has a special bond with the coach who brought him to Toronto.

Barker faced some very stiff competition from the two other nominees for the honour: Marc Trestman, who led the Montreal Alouettes to a 12-6 record and a second straight Grey Cup championship, and Ken Miller, who piloted the 10-8 Saskatchewan Roughriders to their second Grey Cup appearance in as many years.

Cohon praised all three coaches, saying each had achieved one of the toughest tasks in sports: Miller saw to it that his team bounced back from its deeply disappointing defeat in the 2009 Grey Cup, Trestman kept the Als on top of the league, and Barker turned a struggling team into an ascending one.

But in the end, members of the Football Reporters of Canada voted to recognize Barker with the Annis Stukus Trophy, awarded since 1961 to the CFL Coach of the Year.

The announcement here was the culminating event of CFL Congress, two days of meeting for team and league officials from across Canada.

Bringing a highly energetic and positive attitude to the Argos from the first day of training camp, Barker displayed faith in his players and a willingless to take calculated risks, playing a style of football that defied pre-season predictions and entertained fans across the country.

Having recently added General Manager's duties to his portfolio, Barker returns to coach the Argos in 2011, determined to continue the Boatmen's progress towards every team's goal: the 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver this November.

Chalk One Up For Curling

Wednesday night’s curling grudge match between Jennifer Jones and Cathy Overton-Clapham drew more television viewers than the NHL game that followed.

An average audience of 647,000 people watched Overton-Clapham defeat Jones in the first meeting between the two since the Team Canada skip fired her third last year.

Viewership peaked at more than 1.1 million for the Overton-Clapham’s game-sealing final shot.

It’s the third highest rating for a round robin game in tournament history, and more than the Edmonton/Colorado NHL game that night, which drew an average 492,000.

Holland Vs Jones

Defending champion Jennifer Jones and Ontario joined Saskatchewan in the playoffs at the 2011 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, while Nova Scotia and B.C. will meet in a tiebreaker Friday.

Saskatchewan's Amber Holland went 9-2 to earn the No. 1 seeding, followed by Jones in second at 8-3. Ontario's Rachel Homan was also 8-3, but ranked third behind Jones because of a loss to the defending champs in the preliminary round.

Nova Scotia's Heather-Smith Dacey and B.C.'s Kelly Scott finished 7-4 and their tiebreaker Friday afternoon (TSN, 1:30 p.m. ET) will determine the fourth playoff team.

Saskatchewan and the Jones team from Winnipeg meet in the Page playoff between the top two seeds later Friday (TSN, 6:30 ET) with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game.

The loser drops to Saturday evening's semifinal to face the victor between Ontario and the tiebreaker winner earlier in the day. The loser of the three-four game is eliminated.

Jones and second Jill Officer have four Canadian titles together and the last three straight with Dawn Askin at lead. Third Kaitlyn Lawes is a two-time Canadian junior champion.

The Jones rink has far more playoff experience than Holland, whose team went 6-5 and didn't advance in last year's Scotties in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

"You know Jennifer's team is going to play tough in the playoffs," Holland acknowledged. "That's what they do. We play them on the World Curling Tour and when they're playing the last few games, they're always tough.

"A person I used to curl with said 'you need to get to finals to play in them to have the experience to play in them.' I think for them, they've been in those situations so many times, they do all those things well."

Saskatchewan downed Jones 9-3 on Sunday, but lost steam towards the end of the round-robin in losing two of their last three.

Jones clamped down on second spot with a pair of wins Thursday, including an 8-5 victory at night over Alberta, eliminating Shannon Kleibrink's Calgary team from contention.

Jones wasn't feeling much of an advantage over Holland based on Saskatchewan's lack of playoff experience.

"The fact they haven't made the playoffs at a Scotties I don't think makes a difference," the veteran skip. "They've had a great week and they've been around the block a few times. We know we're going to have to play great."

Scott, a two time Canadian and former world championship, stayed alive in dramatic fashion, stealing six points over the last five ends against Saskatchewan in an 8-5 win.

"The old sneak attack," the B.C. skip said. "People were almost ready to write us off. We clawed our way into something to play tomorrow."

B.C. second Sasha Carter is over seven months pregnant, but insists she has another game in her.

"Four more if need be," Carter declared. "One game tomorrow, that's a cinch. Put the feet up all night and in the morning."

Of the five teams remaining, only Jones and B.C. were considered pre-tournament favourites.

The average age of Homan and her teammates is 22. The skip won a Canadian junior title and was runner-up at the world junior championships last year. But the Ottawa rink exhibited few rookie nerves throughout the preliminary round.

"We had a talk about what we needed to do and just reassured each other that we believe in each other and we're dedicated and we worked hard to get here," Homan said. "We belong here."

Nova Scotia was another dark horse. Smith-Dacey was unexpectedly promoted from vice to skip of the Nova Scotia team when five-time Canadian champion and Hall of Famer Colleen Jones was struck with meningitis in December.

Like Homan, the wife of former Canadian champion Mark Dacey also spoke about having the courage to believe they had a chance at a title.

"It's been an interesting road," Smith-Dacey said. "I've just been focused on not changing the goal because we've had a change in the team. Just really trying to step up and be what I have to be on the team and adapt to my new role.

"It's about belief at this point, believing you belong."

Alberta and P.E.I.'s Suzanne Birt finished 6-5 followed by Quebec's Marie-France Larouche and Manitoba's Cathy Overton-Clapham at 4-7, Kerry Galusha of the Territories and New Brunswick's Andrea Kelly tied at 3-8 and Stacie Devereaux of Newfoundland and Labrador at 1-10.

The Madness Moves

I was wondering why the Score wasn't really promoting any coverage of "March Madness" during its college basketball coverage. I now know why...

TSN announced today it will have live coverage of this year’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, commonly referred to as NCAA® MARCH MADNESS®. Complete coverage of the 2011 tournament is available to Canadian fans on TSN and TSN2 beginning Thursday, March 17 at 11:30 a.m. ET.

“It’s hard to find an event with as much drama and excitement as NCAA® MARCH MADNESS®,” said Stewart Johnston, President, TSN. “We are thrilled to add this marquee property to the TSN and TSN2 schedules. Bringing the NCAA tournament to TSN is another example of our commitment to giving Canadians the biggest events in sports.”

TSN will produce an original studio show for pre- and post-game analysis, along with live look-ins to various games.

All games on TSN and TSN2 will be broadcast nationally in High Definition.

This agreement is the latest in a series of recently announced major acquisitions for TSN.

If this keeps up, Renee Paquette and wrestling will be the only thing worth watching on the Score.

Will Anyone Notice?

You will still get into long lineups to get some, you will bitch when your rim does not come up a winner, you will continue to flock to this establishment even though they have arguably the world's worst set of commercials. Yes, even though Tim Hortons is about to do this, you may grumble, but your number of visits will remain the same.

Saskies Clinch First

Amber Holland is going to play in the 1-2 game at the Scotties in Charlottetown. She clinched first place this morning with a win over New Brunswick. Its not known who she will play in that 1-2 game as there are still two draws to go.

Has anyone been screwed over by SGI? Is it supposed to hurt that much or did I not bend over enough! I feel like blogging the nonsense that has been spewed to me over the past 24 hours, but doing that just gets me feeling very, very angry!!!! About as angry as this guy when Bugs steals his weapon.

Holland On TSN This Afternoon

Amber Holland continues to be perfect at the Scotties in Charlottetown after beating Newfoundland this morning. Holland is back on the ice this afternoon. The game against Nova Scotia will be shown on TSN.

Lucas Signing Made Official

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import linebacker Sean Lucas to a new contract. The financial details were not released.

Lucas has played the last five seasons with the Green and White since originally signing as a free agent in May, 2006. In 71 regular season games, the 27-year old has tallied 311 defensive tackles, 21 special team tackles, seven quarterback sacks, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

In 2010, Lucas dressed in 17 regular season games before missing the last game and playoffs with an elbow injury. He finished the regular season with 71 defensive tackles, eight special team tackles, four pass knockdowns, two forced fumbles and one quarterback sack.

Melfort Mustangs Forfeit Three Points

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League has fined the Melfort Mustangs a total of $1,800 dollars and the forfeit of three points after an investigation determined the team had been using an ineligible player.
The investigation determined that an Affiliate Player had exceeded the 10 games he is allowed to appear in SJHL regular season games as per Hockey Canada regulations. The Affiliated Player was deemed an ineligible player in four Mustang games playing 14 rather than 10.
As a result of this incident, the Mustangs forfeit two points from a win against Humboldt on January 28 with the Broncos now getting that victory and one point from a shootout loss to Estevan on February 2. The other two games were Mustang losses. The points lost by the Mustangs do not affect the team positions in the Bauer Conference

Danny Barrett Has A New Job

Dats right! Danny has a new gig and he is working with another former CFL head coach. Here's the release.

Is There An Amber Alert Underway In Charlottetown?

I don't know if it was the motivational speech that Derek "Duke" Meyers gave the Amber Holland rink when they were visiting "The Sportscage" is the reason for their performance or not (likely not), but Team Saskatchewan is rolling at the Scotties in Charlottetown. Holland and her Kronau krew stayed perfect this afternoon with a win over previously unbeaten Ontario. The final was 8-5. She will meet the Yukon/Territories rink tonight. Keep it going Amber!
(A shout-out to my good buddy Tom Pura in Grande Prairie, Alberta--a good old Canora boy--for giving me "The Amber Alert" line. )

Are Dome Dreams Going Up In Smoke?

Unless we get a big announcement from Ottawa this week, it would appear as if Regina won't be getting the domed stadium that so many cherish (and so many don't). Here is the story with the glum news from the Regina Leader-Post

LP Says Lucas Is Back

The Leader-Post's Murray McCormick is informing us through Twitter this morning that Sean Lucas has re-signed with the Riders. How Murray can do this while sitting on his lounger, sipping coffee while watching the Scotties is truly astounding.

Former Pat Has Meltdown

Remember Greg Pankiewicz? He is now coaching the Colorado Eagles of some league and he went a little overboard on the weekend. Enjoy!!

Blogging On A Holiday Monday

Hows your Family Day weekend going so far? By the looks of the amount of traffic that was on the road Saturday and visiting east-end Regina businesses, it looked like many were stocking up until the May long weekend. Then again, maybe it won't be until that weekend when the weather starts to warm up. I'm beyond sick of this winter. It could leave yesterday as far as I'm concerned.

Another reason why I will be glad winter will be gone soon happened Saturday night. First off, let me say I have no problems living in this city that I have called home for most of my life, but there are some things about it that piss me off----like snow removal ( or lack of it) in residential areas. When a city grader goes down a street, why does it leave ruts in the road? Why doesn't it scrape it right down to the pavement? Saturday night, I had to move my vehicle out of the ruts because of an on-coming car, the car started to fishtail and the end result was the back end of my beast getting smacked to the point that I think SGI will be saying "That's all folks". If that happens, it will be the 3rd time since living here that lack of snow removal has caused my car to either be repaired or as the case may be in this one written off. I'll find out Wednesday, but I'm not optimistic.
-----
On to better things and its been a great start for Amber Holland at the Scotties. She beat Manitona and Team Canada on the weekend to sit alone in first place at 2-0 going into this morning's draw. After the success of our juniors, it would be nice to see Amber keep the ball rolling, She can certainly play with the heavyweights like Jones, Kleibrink and Scott so lets keep our fingers crossed.
------
John Cena is in the main event at Wrestlemania. What a surprise!! All apologies to those who didn;t know what happened in the Elimination Chamber before reading this.
------
I have more excitement for the Pats-Hitmen outdoors game this afternoon than I had for last night's Flames-Habs game. Then again, I have no time for either of those NHL franchises so I could have cared less. In watching the game though, I still think Edmonton's Heritage Classic was better.
By the way, congrats to the Pats for somehow pulling it out to be the opposition for the Hitmen today. I would have thought Calgary would have played Edmonton, Vancouver or an Alberta rival in this game, but good for Brent Parker for somehow getting the league to get his team in there. I can only wonder what Dan Plaster's location will look like today. Is he up in the press box or is he down at field level? I couldn't see where the Flames and Habs radio people were set up. Could they have done the game upstairs with a monitor? If so, that's tough.

What is Carey Price's mask supposed to represent?

A tweet from the Calgary Herald's Al Maki shortly after yesterday's game started. "I can't believe I'm at MacMahon Stadium watching a game---there is a lack of Rider fans here." That's true Al, but I'm sure they were there wearing Montreal or Calgary colours.
------
Good for Milos Raonic and his efforts in back to back weeks, but his game is not going to spark a surge in Canadian tennis. If he were to win a Grand Slam event, he might, but not now, Its like Mike Weir getting golf noticed when he won the Masters, but when he wins some other event on the Tour, its a footnote. Good on Rogers Sportsnet though for getting Raonic's finals appearance on yesterday.
------
I keep hearing rumours that the Riders are looking to trade Rob Bagg because of the emergence of Cary Koch. I'm not buying that. I don't think Darian Durant wants to lose two members of his starting receiving corps from last year. Nothing against Koch, who might have been the rookie of the year in the CFL, had he gotten a chance to play earlier, but you just can't give up a Canadian talent like Bagg unless you are getting a LOT in return.
-------
With the SJHL playoffs getting ready to begin, many different people have their idea as to who will be in the final. La Ronge and Yorkton seem to be the favourites and for good reason seeing both won their respective divisions. I don't know who will be in the final, but I will predict that one of the division leaders gets knocked off before the finals.
-------
I think I speak for many when I say weloome back Ubertwitter---or should I say Ubersocial now? That was an annoying 48 hours without you.

Enjoy your Monday and stay warm!!!

More Grapes!

Don Cherry's not going anywhere, at least not for another season of Hockey Night in Canada.

The outspoken commentator renewed his contract with HNIC through the 2011-2012 season, CBC announced on Saturday.

"Don has been a part of the CBC Hockey Night in Canada family since 1980, generating passion and debate among hockey fans everywhere," said Kirstine Stewart, executive vice-president of CBC English Services.

"Hockey Night in Canada, with Don at the desk for its 59th season, will continue to bring the very best of hockey programming on all of its platforms to Canadians everywhere."

Cherry will continue to co-host his hugely popular first intermission Coach's Corner segment with Ron MacLean every Saturday night and through the duration of the Stanley Cup playoffs next season.

"We join millions of fans in congratulating Don on his new contract and wishing him continued success as the declarative voice of CBC's definitive hockey broadcast," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

"Don's knowledge of the sport is exceeded only by his love for it and we are proud of his enduring connection with the game and the National Hockey League. He truly is one of a kind, and it is an honour to consider him a friend."

The 77-year-old Canadian icon joined Hockey Night in Canada in 1980 after a successful coaching career with the Boston Bruins and Colorado Rockies from 1974-80, winning the Jack Adams coach of the year award in 1976 during his time with Boston.

Thumbs Down To The CFL Sked

I'm not sure why the release of a league schedule is such a big deal for fans, but it is. Needless to say, there was a lot of excitement Friday morning as the CFL released its 2011 schedule. Upon looking at it, I wouldn't think Rider fans are too happy for a couple of reasons.

1) The season doesn't open with a Grey Cup rematch. I thought the Riders and Alouettes would open up against one another in either Regina or Montreal. That rematch will happen in Week 2 in Regina and week 4 in Montreal

2) 4 of the last 6 are on the road with those four games being split in Calgary and Edmonton. In fact, six of the last seven games are against Western opponents.

3)Calgary comes here twice before we go there. Why couldn't it be once there, once here, once there, once here.

4) Just one Friday night game. I love Friday night games. I know that isn't the ideal time for many Rider fans outside of Regina, but those are my faves.

If there is one good thing about the sked, there is no home and home with the exception of Winnipeg and we knew we were getting that.

------

Did Bobby Orr get traded? Sorry, but the Tomas Kaberle trade to Boston saw the networks go just a little overboard if you ask me. CMON!!

------

Is it safe to say Brian Burke has now wiggled off the hook. He now has three first round draft picks after dealing Kris Versteeg to Philly and Kaberle. Are Versteeg and Kaberle really worth a first round pick? If they are, Ales Hemsky is worth one and I can't see him sticking around Edmonton as I think he will be big time trade bait. I'd love to see him to go to Buffalo for Tyler Ennis or Drew Stafford. The same might be said for Dustin Penner, but Edmonton needs some size up front that Penner can provide.

-------

I probably won't watch a second of the NBA all-star game and its festivities. I don't think I'm alone when I make that statement.

I won't be watching a second of the Daytona 500 on Sunday. I think I may be virtually alone when I make that statement.
-----
Yorkton beat La Ronge 5-2 in SJHL play Friday. It was a battle of division leaders. Could it be the final pairing again as it was last year. Something tells me no.
-----
Amber Holland can win the Scotties that begins today in Charlottetown, but she is in tough. With names like Jennifer Jones, Kelly Scott, Cathy Overton-Clapham, Marie France-Larouche and Shannon Kleibrink in the field, it will be tough for Amber and company, however, she has shown in the past she can get it done and I am comfident she will. I don't think Jennifer Jones will win this year's Scotties even though she has owned the event. Wouldn't it be something if Cathy Overton-Clapham beat her in the final!
-----
Methinks it might be over for the Pats and I know its over for this posting. Have a good Saturday!

By George, The Riders Have A New D Lineman

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import defensive lineman Tearrius George to a contract. The financial details were not released.

George (6’4 – 263 lbs) spent three seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. The Kansas State product has played in a total of 32 regular season CFL games and tallied 56 defensive tackles, ten sacks, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. In 2010, George dressed in eight games while starting on the defensive line in four. He finished the season with four tackles, one quarterback sack and one fumble recovery.

The 28-year-old entered the CFL in 2007 when he signed as a free agent with the Stamps after spending a season with the New York Jets. In 2008, George returned to the NFL where he spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins before returning to Calgary in September, 2009.

Riders Stick Feet In Free Agent Pool

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed non-import offensive lineman George Hudson to a contract. The financial details were not released.

Hudson (6’4 – 310 lbs) spent the last five seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. In 2010, the 34-year-old dressed in nine regular season games while starting in the first four games of the season. He missed the rest of the regular season due to injury.

Prior to joining the Ti-Cats, the New Mexico State product spent four seasons with the Ottawa Renegades after being selected in the 2002 CFL Expansion Draft.

Hudson was originally drafted by the Edmonton Eskimos in the 3rd round (17th overall) in the 2000 Canadian College Draft. After attending training camp with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys that year, Hudson signed with the Eskimos in September and made his CFL debut that same week.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import cornerback John Eubanks to a contract. The financial details were not released.

Eubanks (5’10 – 173 lbs) originally entered the CFL when he signed as a free agent with Winnipeg in April, 2009. After being released he went on to play 11 regular season games with the Calgary Stampeders where he accumulated 36 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. The Southern Mississippi product also had six kick-off returns for 23 yards.

Prior to joining the CFL, the 27-year-old played two seasons with the Washington Redskins, appearing in seven games. He had seven tackles while having kick return duties for the Redskins.

The Power Of Twitter

Twitter came through big-time for me last night----or should I say my list of followers. There I was in Melfort at the Northern Lights Palace where the SJHL Presidents Tour was wrapping up and the snow was coming down and coming down hard. I knew snow was in the forecast for the region, but the reports I had seen earlier in the day were calling for the snow to start falling around midnight. Those same reports said Regina was to start getting snow in the early morning hours as well.
We left Melfort about 930 and it was not pleasant. It wasn't white-out, but it was close, and it was tough to see the lines on the highway. It was then that I asked the question "Is it snowing in the YQR?". It did not take long for the answers to come flooding in that it wasn't making us know that we could probably drive through this. About an hour later we did and it was clear sailing all the way home. To those who twittered in with the conditions, thanks a bunch!

I have been through Melfort on many a time, but yesterday was the first time I had spent significant time in the community for quite a while---and coincidentally, the last time I was there was to watch the Mustangs. It was 1996 and it was the first ever Royal Bank Cup being played. It went at the Northern Lights Palace and unfortunately for the host team, the tournament ended on a sour note as Melfort was beaten in the final 2-0 after basically owning the event in the round-robin. I don't think anyone from the area thought the Mustangs would lose to the Vernon Vipers in the final of that event as they walked in the rink that afternoon. They were in shock when it was over. What I still remember so vividly from that game is then Mustangs coach Kevin Dickie basically breaking down underneath the stands as he waited for the post-game press conference. Kevin just could not get his emotions under control after that game as he apologized to the town, the league and whoever for not being able to bring the trophy to Melfort. That was a long time ago, and I still remember it so well. Being back in that spot yesterday really brought the memories flooding back. One thing I did forget is that Kings defenceman Willie Mitchell played on that Melfort team that lost. I knew he was a Mustang, but I thought he was there after the RBC appearance.

The Presidents Tour is now over and I had a chance to meet a lot of good people that are connected with the various organizations over the past five weeks. It was a lot of travel, but it was worth it when you see the desire and the passion that a community has to make its team work both on and off the ice. There are many people I could single out, but in every place, clubs and communities are working hard to keep their teams afloat while working to find a way to keep people coming to the rink. Its hard these days to do that, but for the moment, the battle is being won---albeit barely at times.
------
The Rider Nation isn't happy that the team hasn't made a free agent splash. What area did you want to see improvement in? Who was the guy that you think the team should have grabbed that got away? Avon Cobourne wasn't needed here and either was Dwight Anderson. I would have liked to seen Kevin Huntley wearing green, but the Argos signed him just before free agency started. It hurt to see Rey Williams go to Hamilton, but this team has a lot of depth and in the first days of free agency, you don't sign guys to fill a spot unless he is an impact guy and the Riders are fine at the impact positions as far as I'm concerned.
-----
Some have been crying over the fact CFL free agency starts at midnight. I agree! It would be much simpler for free agency to start at 10 AM instead of midnight. In today's world of social media, you can announce the signing at any time, but having it start during working hours would create much more interest in my mind.
-----
When is the CFL schedule coming out?
-----
Most everywhere I went on the Prez Tour, I had people asking me about the Riders and how they are going to be this year with Greg Marshall as head coach. I tell them that Marshall has big shoes to fill, and that I don't know if they will finish first, but I think they will be OK. The RN will obviously be disgusted if Marshall doesn't take to the team to the Grey Cup seeing Ken Miller did that the last two years and there is no guarantee that they will get there, but I like the way look and I like the way they stack up against Calgary, BC and yes Edmonton.
------
The days of thinking the Alouettes were a classy group may be ending. I wasn't impressed with their whiny attitude during the Grey Cup and the Dwight Anderson signing makes me scratch my head. I am guessing Marc Trestman has told Dwight its my way or the highway and that he better not be the distraction he was in Calgary.
-----
The Leafs are six points out of a playoff spot?
----
Was Darryl Sutter that bad in Calgary? What has gotten into the Flames since he left? The question now is does this team think they can make a serious run even though they are still an older team or do they blow it up to start getting younger. I know what I'd do.
-----
Has anyone ever told Rod Pedersen about sunscreen? That boy looks as if he needs to stick his face in a snowbank when he returns from his Jamaican vacation. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out his blog. That can't be and won't be pleasant.
-----
I'm going to join Derek "Duke" Meyers in the Sportscage this afternoon. He has done a tremendous job in subbing in with both Rod and I unavailable. I think we have our number three hitter in the lineup!!
-----
I'm OK with the Jose Bautista contract if in fact the stories are true about 5 years at 70 million. I don't think Bautista comes close to hitting the homers he did last year, but if can be a 30 homer man, I'll take it.
----
Have the Yankees already started making Albert Pujols jerseys yet?
----
I just received notification of a fantasy baseball league that I have been in for years starting up again. I am a fantasy sports-a-holic and I am trying to limit the # of leagues that I'm in or hockey pools. It has worked for baseball, not so much for football.

Cobourne a Tabbie

Avon Cobourne is trading in his Montreal colours for Hamilton ones. The Ti-Cats have signed the free agent running back that the Als seemingly no longer wanted.

Defensive back Geoff Tisdale has signed with Calgary. He will try and fill the void left open by Dwight Anderson.

One More Reason To Hate Montreal

Pats Outdoors Game To Be Televised

The Western Hockey League in partnership with Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast the first ever Canadian Hockey League Outdoor Game in Canada when the Calgary Hitmen host the Regina Pats at McMahon Stadium on Monday, February 21 at 3 p.m. (ET)/1 p.m. (MT) on the Sportsnet East, Ontario, West and Pacific channels. The game will also be in high definition.

The game coincides with Family Day Monday, a statutory holiday in many Canadian provinces, and will be played the day after the National Hockey League’s Heritage Classic set for February 20th between the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens.

Hockeycentral analysts Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean join host Daren Millard at McMahon Stadium for the broadcast. Roger Millions will be on skates conducting on-ice interviews with players and coaches.

Canada's voice of junior hockey Peter Loubardias will have the play-by-play call while Sam Cosentino handles the analysis.

Sportsnet will also feature a wireless handheld camera, stationed between the benches, which will be used on the ice during stoppages in play.

"As the popularity of outdoor games continue to skyrocket, Rogers Sportsnet is proud to partner with the WHL to present this game to Canadians," said Rob Corte, Executive Producer, Events, Rogers Sportsnet. "We’re excited about the opportunity to give fans a different perspective with the wireless camera. It will give the viewer a unique experience from inside the glass, capturing the emotion on the ice up close."

“We are delighted that Rogers Sportsnet will be broadcasting nationally the first ever outdoor game to be played in Canada in CHL history,” said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “Thanks to the cooperation from the National Hockey League and the Calgary Flames, the WHL is in a position to stage this historic game as part of the NHL Heritage Classic weekend festivities in Calgary.”

Any Fella Looking To Commit Relationship Suicide Out There

I'm in Nipawin as the SJHL President's Tour continues. While visiting various businesses in the town today, I came across this book.

I don't know what right-thinking male would actually buy this book and if for some reason he did, do I really want to know how this might be answered.

It would be like buying your wife a treadmill or an exercise bike for a gift. I'm not saying your fat, but here's a treadmill honey love ya lots.

WOW!!!

PS: It kills me to be in Nipawin and I don't have my golf clubs. The Evergreen Course is perhaps the best course I have played in Saskatchewan. I found out the annual meeting goes here in June. I'll have my clubs ready for that one----if of course the weather co-operates and the way the last couple of Junes have been, that's a question mark.

CFL Free Agents

The CFL has provided a list of free agents. Check it out.

Stewart Signs New Deal

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import linebacker Kye Stewart to a new contract. The financial details were not released.

Stewart is heading into his third season with the Roughriders. The 26-year old dressed in ten regular season games last season and recorded ten defensive tackles, 12 special teams tackles and a forced fumble.

In his two seasons with the Green and White, Stewart has dressed in 17 games and recorded 23 defensive tackles, 24 special teams tackles, one interception and two forced fumbles.

*The Riders also announced today they have released import returner/receiver Ryan Grice-Mullen.

????

After just two games, Peter Forsberg is ending his comeback. The Colorado forward will announce his retirement today. He had been away for the game for two years before returning last week.

First thoughts --- Was he seen filming a commercial at Sears this weekend?
Is he thinking about joining "Dancing With the Stars"
Should female hockey fans in Denver be afraid of receiving any "unwanted" text messages or photos?
Did he overhear his name in a conversation involving Brian Burke?

Weekend Thoughts

These are random and in no particular order

--When the CFL hall of fame class for 2011 was named last week, I had no idea this was Damon Allen's first year of eligibility. I have to ask if those making the selections knew. How can Allen not be an automatic first time hall of famer. Those who made the decision as to who gets in should be embarrassed. After all, he only has the most yards passing of any quarterback CFL or NFL, he has the most yards rushing of any quarterback in both leagues, and four Grey Cups to his credit to which he won MVP I think two or three times. I have no problem with the likes of Danny MacManus, Joe Montford and Terry Vaughn getting in, but when those three get in ahead of Allen, there's something wrong.

--Who wins the Brier final? Will it be Kevin Martin or Glenn Howard. Can the two just play a best of 7 to determine it. Nothing against the likes of Brad Gushue, Jeff Stoughton or Pat Simmons, but those two are just one step ahead of the curve when it comes to mens curling in our country.

--I'm guessing Saskatchewan curling fans would rather see Martin win and represent Canada at the Worlds because A) he is a Western Canadian boy and B) Ben Hebert is from Regina. Of course, Saskatchewan curling fans would be downright giddy if Simmons were to somehow win and come into the Brandt Centre wearing Canadian colours. It wouldn't be as emotional as when Sandra Schmirler did it just after winning Olympic gold, but it would be something to remember.

--I can see the Riders wanting to keep their own free agents, but is there anyone out there that I think they should pursue. The only one that jumps out at me is Kevin Huntley. I think the Toronto defensive tackle would great in that d-line rotation with Chunky and Keith Shologan.

--As you know I am an Oiler fan and I am optimistic at what the future holds, but I have to admit I am disappointed with the fact that the team is once again the worst team in the NHL and has the inside track at the number one pick. I thought they would be better than what they have been and that they would challenge for a playoff spot this year. Their effort this weekend against Ottawa and particularly yesterday against Anaheim was one or two levels beyond abysmal. I wonder if Steve Tambellini would even consider trading the number one pick to someone. Is Adam Larsson the guy? Is Sean Couturier the guy? How about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. I would think Larsson, but I also think the Oilers could get a pretty nice package from someone.

--What did you watch yesterday with no football on. Golf? NBA? Anything?

--CTV brought us up to date with some of our Olympians as the anniversary of the Vancouver Olympics hits. As caught up as we were in what athletes were winning medals, did anyone keep track of what Alex Bilodeau has been doing this year or Jon Montgomery or any of other Olympic winners. They get their 15 minutes for two weeks of the year and we talk about how great they are and then they just fade off into the sunset trying to capitalize on their moment of glory. That's a little sad when you think about it, but it just shows that if it isn't hockey or curling, that most of us don't care.

--Fellas, make sure you treat your favourite lady right today. In some cases, it might be ladies right? For those that hate this day because you are single, yeah I understand your complaint, but what'cha gonna do?

--Milos Raonic becomes the first Canadian to win a tennis tournament in years in San Jose last night. He gets amongst other things for winning a Sharks jersey? Really? Why? I hope it wasn't because he was Canadian. Would this mean the winners of the tennis tournaments in Montreal and Toronto get Habs and Leafs jerseys? Would the Calgary Stampede start giving Flames jerseys to winners of the chuckwagon races. I scratch my head on that one.

--Prediction from yours truly about who the Undertaker will face at WM 28. He will take on Triple H with Shawn Michaels serving as the guest referee.

--Baseball's best player Albert Pujols will not talk contract after spring training starts which is very soon. Somewhere the Yankees and Red Sox are already drooling thinking about having Pujols in one of their jerseys. Here's one I would love. How about Albert wearing a Cubbies jersey? It would pain Cardinal fans to see Albert wearing Chicago blue.

--I've said it once, I'll say it again. Smokin Okies has some of the best chow in the city.

Mario's Mad

The NHL has come down hard on the New York Islanders for their part in Friday's brawl, but Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux says they didn't come down hard enough. Lemieux has released this statement in the wake of the suspensions.

Perhaps Mario should show how he serious he is with his disgust by calling Matt Cooke into his office and saying his services are no longer needed.

A Sunday Without Football

Its been a while since we've had a Sunday without football, but get used to it because we have a few months to get through until the CFL returns. I present to you then what you can possibly do to get over this drought.

Thanks, But No Thanks!

Its not often that the University of Regina student newspaper "The Carillon" gets a scoop, but it got one today and it got the debate going. Former Rider running back Kenton Keith says he would love to continue his football career in Saskatchewan and hopes to work out for the football club when he comes back to Regina in a couple of weeks to visit his son.
Do the Saskatchewan Roughriders need Kenton Keith? They have Wes Cates and Hugh Charles. Is Kenton Keith in shape? How is his knee? How is his attitude? If the workout goes well and the price is right, anything can happen, but I would be shocked if K-K signs a contract with the Riders.
---
Great interview with Eskimos GM Eric Tillman by CJME's Jamie Nye on Friday night. The ever quotable Tillman had a few quotes in his session with Jamie. Amongst the highlights...

-- He expects Mo Lloyd to remain an Eskimo. There is thought that he could be coming back to Saskatchewan although I don't think he will be if Rey Williams comes back.

--The Eskimos will be a minor player in free agency having just signed a couple of Canadians (Donovan Alexander, Chris Bauman)

--The signing of Alex Gauthier by the Riders was a tremendous move

--Greg Marshall was a tremendous hire and he has surrounded himself with a great coaching staff especially Craig Dickenson.

--He will not raid the Riders when it comes to free agency saying he still has great respect and affection for the organization.

--There are a lot of similarities between Kent Austin and Kavis Reed.

You can hear the whole interview at http://www.newstalk980.com/audio/sports-night/20110211-eric-tillman-sports-night-february-11-2011

I wonder if Jamie would have gotten that interview if the Sharks hadn't been playing on the East coast. Never mind, I know the answer to that question.
------
How much do the Penguins miss Crosby and Malkin. You know things aren't right when the Islanders hang a 9-3 beating on you!

I'll have to check this out on my NHL 11, but with the rosters being updated continuously, I am guessing those playing Pittsburgh right now don't have the services of Sid or Geno. I just got Jordan Eberle back on the Oilers after he missed some time.

Still with Sid, do you think he's coming back this year? I'm starting to have my doubts even though he said he'd be back.

Are the Blackhawks going to make the playoffs?
Are the Flames going to make the playoffs?
The gap between 4th and 14th in the West is just 10 points.
----
The Sun Life "retirement" commercial makes me want to reach for the remote. That, without a doubt, is the worst commercial on TV today. Its a runaway right now.
----
The Pats rebuild has been a good one by GM Chad Lang, but I just don't see this team making the playoffs this year. There are just a couple of intangibles that this team is missing. They will make the playoffs next year though.
-----
The SJHL regular season is starting to wind down. Playoffs will start before the month is over and things are slowly starting to get settled. There's still a couple of races to go, but there is nothing to suggest at this time that the final four won't be Kindersley, Yorkton, La Ronge and Melfort. If those are indeed your final four, there will be two great conference finals and one outstanding league final.
-----
As bad as the Raptors are, there are four teams that are worse (Washington, Cleveland, Sacramento, Minnesota). How is that possible? At least Jerry Colangelo didn't trade any first round picks to the Celtics.
------
Saturday is CBC"s Hockey Day in Canada. Whitehorse is home base this year. This is an outstanding day in which our game is celebrated. Watch the festivities before the games because that may be the best part of the day. HNIC does it right on days like HDIC.
-----
If you're falling off a cliff you might as well try to fly, you've got nothing else to lose.

UFC 129 Is A Popular Ticket

From the Canadian Press

Demand continued to far outstrip supply for Toronto UFC tickets Friday as the limited number available on a second day of a pre-sale for UFC 129 disappeared within minutes.

On the plus side, good seats are still available for the April 30 show at the Rogers Centre — if a few extra zeros don't bother you.

On Friday, ticket reseller Stubhub offered seats from $104.99 (500 level, Row 20, corner upper tier) to $39,999 (ringside cage, Row 1).

Tickets originally ranged in price from $50 to $800.

If you are feeling particularly flush, there are four of those $39,999 cageside seats available.

But for those who can't afford their own private jet, Stubhub had field-level seats going from $767 to $25,999.

The UFC sold out its original block of 42,000 tickets Thursday, prompting it to release more so there would still be some available Friday in a second pre-sale and Saturday to the general public.

Friday's pre-sale was for those who subscribe to the UFC newsletter.

“The traffic was significant and I think there were all gone within four minutes,” said Tom Wright, the UFC's director of Canadian operations.

UFC 129, slated for April 30 at the Rogers Centre, has already shattered the North American attendance record for a mixed martial arts show.

The previous record was UFC 124 in Montreal, which drew 23,152 to the Bell Centre in December.

“There'll be a limited number of tickets available. They will be across all price points,” Wright said of what was left for Saturday's shoppers.

Thursday's tickets went to members of the UFC Fight Club or fans willing to pay the near $90 premium to join the fan club.

Searching for tickets at 10 a.m. ET when the Friday pre-sale window opened produced a lot of “Sorry, no exact matches were found, but other tickets may still be available” messages on Ticketmaster.

Some frantic typing over an hour produced two single tickets: one at $75 and the other at $800.

Wright said he expected to know by Monday at the latest the exact number of tickets sold for the Toronto show. There is a chance some additional tickets may come up, depending on final setup of the arena.

“We really won't know that until literally two or three days before the event.”

Could this week's sales have gone any better?

“We were managing our own expectations and other people's expectations,” Wright answered. “And we were excited about what happened and we're pleased with what happened.

“I think that's Step 1 of making sure that this is an event that the city of Toronto and UFC fans across Ontario, Canada and the world will never forget.”

The Rogers Centre card will be the UFC's sixth in Canada. Montreal has hosted UFC 83, 97, 113 and 124 while Vancouver hosted UFC 115.

Rider News--Coaches/Gauthier

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have finalized their coaching staff with the addition of Mike Walker as defensive line coach. The club also announced that Gary Etcheverry will return as a defensive assistant coach.

Walker brings over 25 years of playing and coaching experience to the Riders. He spent last season as the defensive line coach for the Edmonton Eskimos. He was a defensive consultant with the Toronto Argonauts in 2007 and 2008 and spent 11 seasons coaching the defensive line at Washington State prior to that.

Walker was a three-time CFL all-star during his playing career with Hamilton and Edmonton. He played in four Grey Cup championships, once with Edmonton and three times with Hamilton, winning once in 1986. He ended his 10-year playing career with 95.5 quarterback sacks.

Etcheverry returns for his fourth consecutive season taking on the defensive assistant role he assumed with the team in 2008. Over the past 25 years, Etcheverry has coached in the CFL, Canadian Junior, CIS, NFL, NFL Europe and NCAA systems.
------
The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed non-import offensive lineman Alexandre Gauthier to a contract. Terms were not disclosed.

Gauthier is entering his tenth CFL season. He was originally drafted first overall in the 2002 CFL Canadian Draft by the Ottawa Renegades. He dressed in 16 regular season games in his three seasons with Ottawa, before joining the Calgary Stampeders where he played in 34 games over two seasons.

In 2007, he joined Winnipeg where he started in all 36 regular season games in his two seasons with the Bombers and was named an East Division all-star in 2007. Gauthier has spent the past two seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where he started all 36 regular season games at left tackle.

Friday This and That

I've been a little out of it for the past 24-36 hours, but there are a couple of things I want to comment on so here goes.

--My interest in the NHL has been waning again this year for whatever reason. However, if I could see more games like the Boston-Montreal tilt on Wednesday, I would be hooked again. That was one of the best games I have seen in a long time. It had it all--including a goalie fight. Everyone was happy with the exception of the two coaches who were disgusted because the defensive style that has become all so infamous with the game disappeared.

--There is talk on this Friday morning that Brett Favre will be on the next season of "Dancing with the Stars". Someone please tell me this isn't going to happen. Then again, as a friend of mine has pointed out, the way he danced around retirement over the last few years, he might be a natural.

--Congrats to Derek "Duke" Meyers who I think hit a homer on Day 1 of being a sports talk show radio host. The Global TV sportscaster seemed right at home yesterday as he hosted "Sportscage" in place of the vacationing Rod Pedersen. He was no Bob McCown, but then again who is. One of the questions he asked was "Who is the most powerful sports figure in Saskatchewan?". I didn't hear all the answers, but the guy I would put at the top of that list is Jim Hopson.

--For those wondering why Duke is sitting in Rod's chair and not me while he is in Jamaica, the reason is simple. I have SJHL business to attend to on the road and could not do it. If the dates co-operate, I will gladly get in the chair to yak sports, but when you can't, you can't.

--For those who have not gotten an answer from Rod on the departure of Bill Toffan from the WOLF and are now asking me, I can't shed any light or share any news on the situation.

--Good luck to all Saskatchewan athletes heading to the Canada Winter Games. To get complete results of what is happening at the Games, go to www.canadagames.ca.

--Is it just me or are CFL teams overpaying. 125 thousand for Chris Bauman. 150 thousand for Alex Gauthier. Teams know what the cap is and if they can pay that amount and still be under, that's great, but I am left to wonder.

--It didn't take long for SGI to find a new spokesperson for the renewing your licence plates online campaign. I see Chris Getzlaf has taken over for Andy Fantuz. Is Getzlaf Flakes next?? I really believe he will be the beneficiary of Andy's leaving and so will Jordan Sisco.

--Now that the temperature is back to around the freezing mark, can we please stay like this or at least not have another wild swing where its around freezing one day and minus 30 the next. That has been killing a few people lately that have asthma including me. Trust me on that one!

--Have Regina police or Regina RCMP put out a missing persons release on Dan McIntosh's hair? I watched the CTV sports last nite and did a triple-take when I saw that Danny Mac---Regina's best and most entertaining reporter as far as I'm concerned -- hasn't had it shaved to the wood, but its close. This from a guy who was on a couple of weeks ago to which Mrs. Scruffy said "Dan needs a haircut". He got one alright---and then some.

--Global is asking people to describe their street. I missed the original story on this so I don't know where they are going, but if I had to describe my street, I would say "quiet". If I had to describe the condition of the road on my street, I would say average to above average in the summer and average to below average in the winter.

--The CFL Hall of Fame will see Don Matthews, Danny MacManus, Joe Montford and Terry Vaughn going in. Chris Flynn is going in as well. ??????? Yes, he is a three time winner of the Hec Crighton award (CIS MVP), but did he ever play a down in the CFL? Wasn't he a quarterback on the World League's Montreal Machine? Does anyone remember the Montreal Machine?

--I won't be in attendance this year, but the Luther Invitational Basketball Tournament is in my mind one of the best things about Regina. The kids at the school work their tails off to make that tournament the success it is. There may be no louder place than that tiny gym when the finals are on. I did the finals one year for Access and I could hardly hear myself. That type of atmosphere makes it fun.

--I don't think this is a real network, but if it is, someone needs to replace this ditzy little "princess" and quickly....

I would expect something like this coming from someone in a j-school who doesn't know any better (even though they should if speaking in front of a camera), but if this person has gotten a job than there is something wrong. She makes people like Sara Orlesky, Martine Gaillard, Kate Beirness, Hannah Storm, etc, etc look bad.

--I don't know if this is real, but this is funny!!!!

Have a great Friday and a great weekend! Its going to be nice so get out there!!

His Wife Will Be Happy

Mike Fisher has been traded to Nashville for a first round pick this season and a pick next season. I'm typing this off my Blackberry and I can't remember what the pick was, but I believe its a 2nd.

For those who don't know, Mrs. Mike Fisher is Carrie Underwood.

Is This Worth a Suspension?

Ryan Getzlaf returned to the Anaheim lineup with a splash last night. The Regina native has missed a bunch of games after he broke several bones in his face when hit by a puck. Some think he needs to miss some more time after this incident last nite, but I don't agree. What do you think about this hit?

Miami Gets WM 28

MIAMI TO HOST WRESTLEMANIA XXVIII
February 9, 2011

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade Sports Commission, Miami-Dade County, Miami Dolphins, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, and WWE announced Wednesday that Sun Life Stadium, home of the Dolphins and other world-class events, will host WWE's annual pop culture extravaganza, WrestleMania XXVIII, on Sunday, April 1, 2012.

The announcement was made Wednesday at a press conference at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Miami-Dade County Commissioner and Chairman of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission Jose "Pepe" Diaz, Miami-Dade Sports Commission Executive Director Mike Sophia, Miami Dolphins CEO Mike Dee, former Dolphins Quarterback and NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino, and Miami Dolphins limited partner and Grammy Award Winner Emilio Estefan, joined WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon and WWE's Senior Vice President of Special Events John Saboor in making the announcement. WWE Superstars John Cena, The Miz, Mark Henry and Alberto Del Rio, and WWE Diva Eve were also on hand for the announcement.

"Miami has always been the home of first class events, and this event will add to that legacy," said Jose "Pepe" Diaz, Miami-Dade County Commissioner and Chairman of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission. "Hosting WrestleMania is a huge coup for Miami."

"On behalf of WWE, I would like to thank Commissioner Diaz and all his colleagues for their support, and the Miami-Dade Sports Commission for graciously rolling out the red carpet to bring WrestleMania to one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities," said Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman and CEO. "We look forward to adding WrestleMania to the list of prestigious events held at Sun Life Stadium."

More Optimism For New Stadium

We've been getting little snippets of information over the past couple of weeks that would seemingly indicate good news when it comes to Regina getting a new stadium. Here's the latest little bit of info.

O Day Retires

After 14 seasons in the CFL, offensive lineman Jeremy O’Day has announced his retirement. O’Day will join the Saskatchewan Roughriders front office as Football Operations Coordinator.

“I would like to thank the entire Roughrider organization, the fans and my teammates for the past 12 years,” stated O’Day. “It has truly been an honour to be involved with such a great organization. I’ll never forget the amazing feeling of running onto the field at Mosaic Stadium.”

“While my playing days are over, I am very honoured and privileged to accept the position of Football Operations Coordinator. It has always been a dream of mine to continue on with the Roughriders after my playing career. I look forward to continuing to help this organization be the best team possible.”

O’Day originally joined the Toronto Argonauts in 1997 after a stellar collegiate career at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where he was a three time All-American Division II player. In two seasons with Toronto, O’Day dressed in 36 games and was a member of the 1997 Grey Cup championship Argonaut team.

In 1999, O’Day signed in Saskatchewan as a free agent and spent the next 12 seasons as stalwart in the middle of the Riders offensive line. His 202 regular season games played for the Green & White ranks him 12

th on the club’s all-time games played list. He also played in 16 playoff games and three Grey Cup games, helping the team win the championship in 2007.

Known for his fierce competitiveness and leadership on and off the field, O’Day was named a divisional all-star six times and a CFL all-star three times. He was also the Riders nominee for Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in four seasons.

O’Day and his family have made Regina their year-round home and he has spent countless hours in the community. That dedication was recognized by the CFL in 2008 when he was named the Tom Pate Award recipient which goes to the player with outstanding sportsmanship, who made a contribution to his team, as well as, to his community.

“I can’t begin to express what Jeremy O’Day has meant to the Roughrider organization over the past twelve years,” stated Riders VP of Football Operations Ken Miller. “Without question, he will be thought of as one of the best offensive lineman of his time, but his work ethic, professionalism, dedication and leadership is something that can never be replaced. While he will be missed on the field, we are very excited to have him join our football operations department. We know he will bring that same dedication and passion to his new role and will be a very valuable asset to the club for years to come.”

Touchdown Atlantic Returns

Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic II is coming to Moncton this Fall.

"We're thrilled to be bringing another regular season game to the city of Moncton, and our fans and friends from across Atlantic Canada," said Mark Cohon, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League.

Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc said his city is enormously proud to welcome the CFL back this season after hosting the very first ever CFL regular season game in Atlantic Canada last year.

"We are excited and ready to make the sequel even bigger and better than the original," LeBlanc said.

Moncton City Council tonight officially ratified an agreement with the CFL to bring another regular season game to Moncton.

Details, including the two participating CFL teams, the date and time of the game will be announced shortly, along with the full CFL schedule for 2011.

"Scotiabank is thrilled to have partnered with the CFL on the inaugural Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic Festival, and we are more excited to see it return to the East coast for a second year," said Peter Bessey, Scotiabank Senior Vice-President, Atlantic Region. "Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic is truly a celebration of sport, Canadian culture and a great game that unites people in communities across Canada."
Last year, the Toronto Argonauts "hosted" the Edmonton Eskimos in the first Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic in Moncton.

The game sold out in a mere 36 hours, months in advance of the kickoff, and was accompanied by a tremendous festival that featured huge crowds and great fun.

"Moncton continues to build a sterling reputation as Atlantic Canada's entertainment centre, and the CFL's return here, on the heels of the massive U2 concert this summer, is further proof of that," LeBlanc said.

Cohon said the CFL continues to evaluate the opportunity to play more games in Atlantic Canada in the years ahead.

"Time will tell whether we are expanding our footprint in the region, or in a position to consider actual expansion to Atlantic Canada," Cohon said.

"What we do know is the first Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic was a huge hit, and working with our civic and corporate partners in the region, we're going to strive to make Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic Two even better."

Information on how to obtain tickets for Scotiabank Touchdown Atlantic will be made available in the coming weeks.

Brett Who?

It was debated from every different angle, but in the end, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson did the right thing. They had the tough task of telling Brett Favre it was time to go. They could see it was Aaron Rodgers' time. McCarthy and Thompson were crucified for the move, but who's laughing now. The Packers are back on top of the NFL.
As the Steelers took the ball down by six with a few minutes left on the clock, I had this eerie thought of my prediction (stated in last post) coming true and that Ben Roethlisberger would work some magic one more time. It wasn't to be as Green Bay beat the Steelers 31-25.
Just some thoughts on the Packers win and the overall day
--Memo to self. When going out on Super Bowl Sunday, make sure I am going some place where Access is the cable subscriber so I can see the American ads. I screwed that up big-time. I got stuck being at a place where Bell was the subscriber and those at Bell did not want to have American ads running. BOOOOOO!!!. Bottom line though was I enjoyed the game, had some eats and drank some brewskies with some good friends while debating the issues so it was good---but still.
--When did the Super Bowl become American propaganda? Some of the things FOX does are outstanding, but I thought they went a little over the top yesterday.
--Sam Elliott's intros of the two teams was fantastic. How can you not love that guy's whiskey voice.
--I failed to notice the Christina Aguilera screw-up.
--If Bill Leavy would have been the ref for Super Bowl 45, I would have walked out knowing the game was in Pittsburgh's hands much like it was five years ago in Detroit. (The scar isn't disappearing).
--The game symbolized the Packers season. Dealing with big-time injuries and succeeding. This is a team that lost the likes of Ryan Grant, Jermichael Finley and Nick Barnett during the regular season for the year and they lost guys like Donald Driver and Charles Woodson during the Super Bowl. They didn't make excuses and they found a way to get it done-----much like a certain football team did under Ken Miller in 2008 when injury after injury after injury happened.
--Nothing against Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Mike Strahan and Jimmy Johnson, but FOX should have rolled the dice and given us some "Animation Domination". Imagine a roundtable of Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Stewie Griffin, and Stan Smith breaking down the Super Bowl. They even could have had an interview with Ben Roethlisberger done by Glen Quagmire. GIGGITY!!! Think about it!!
--I can't express how much the half-time show sucked. As one person said in the place I was at as he yelled on screen at Fergie "Either get naked or stop singing". I couldn't disagree.
--Biggest play of the game was the 3rd down completion from Aaron Rodgers to Greg Jennings on the drive that led to the Packers final field goal. Yes, the Mendenhall fumble at the start of the 4th was big, but it wasn't the final nail in the coffin. The Jennings catch turned out to be.
--What type of numbers would Rodgers have had if his receivers hung on to the football?
--Did James Harrison or Troy Polamulu have their names mentioned? Harrison sacked Rodgers once and Polamulu crushed Jennings at the goal-line on one of his TD catches, but that was it.
--How much consideration did Jordy Nelson get for MVP?
--I wonder if Brett Favre texted his congratulations to Rodgers or the Packers. If he was a good man, he would.
-----
Congrats to Braeden Moskowy and his Regina rink. What an ending to the Canadian junior mens final. He won it on a measurement in the extra end meaning its a Saskatchewan sweep at the Juniors.
----
Pat Simmons is heading back to the Brier. No pressure on you Pat. Saskatchewan hasn't won the Brier in how long and if you win this year, you get to curl in the Worlds at the Brandt Centre. No pressure whatsoever.
-----
One other thing. Peter Forsberg is ready to resume his career in the NHL. The one question I have is this "Is Forsberg Swedish for Favre?"

This Commercial Won't Be Aired Today

Danica Patrick and a Godaddy.com ad has been determined too racy to be run on Super Bowl Sunday. Here it is..

I love it!! What about you!

The Big Day Has Arrived

After two weeks of hype, it is game day. The Packers and the Steelers will battle it out in Dallas in Super Bowl 45 with the winner getting their hands on "The Vince". I'm expecting this to be a pretty good football game and I'm expecting it to be more high scoring than some people think.

Here's the game preview from NFL Media.....

It all comes down to this.

On Sunday, February 6, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers will meet in Super Bowl XLV (6:00 PM ET, FOX) at Cowboys Stadium in North Texas. The game features two of the most storied franchises in NFL history. The Steelers have won an NFL-best six Super Bowls and the Packers own 12 NFL championships (three Super Bowls), the most all-time.

At 28-16 (.636), Green Bay has the league’s best postseason record. Pittsburgh is second with a 33-19 (.635) mark.

“We’re very similar organizations,” says Steelers chairman emeritus DAN ROONEY. “We’re similar in the way we operate. We have great respect for the Packers and we always have.”

The Steelers are back in the Super Bowl for the third time in the past six years. Pittsburgh defeated Seattle in Super Bowl XL (February 5, 2006) and knocked off Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII (February 1, 2009). The Steelers will make their eighth Super Bowl appearance, tied with the Dallas Cowboys for the most all-time.

“This is Pittsburgh,” says Steelers linebacker LARRY FOOTE. “If you don’t win the Super Bowl, it’s a bust. The guys in the 1970s created that mentality. You have to do your best to follow suit. Our defensive meeting room is right next to the Lombardi Trophies. Everyone is expected to do their part to win. The standards don’t change.”

Green Bay returns to the Super Bowl for the first time since back-to-back appearances in Super Bowl XXXI (January 26, 1997) and XXXII (January 25, 1998). The Packers beat New England in Super Bowl XXXI and lost to Denver in Super Bowl XXXII. Green Bay will make its fourth Super Bowl appearance, including victories in Super Bowl I and II.

“To me, this means everything,” says Packers veteran wide receiver DONALD DRIVER, who will play in his first Super Bowl. “When you play in this league a long time, the ultimate goal is to first get to the Super Bowl and then the ultimate goal is to win it. I’m excited about it. The biggest thing for me now is to put that ring on my finger and have it be part of my legacy that I’ve been to the Super Bowl and won it.”

In the AFC Championship Game, the Steelers knocked off the New York Jets 24-19 at Heinz Field. Running back RASHARD MENDENHALL rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown and quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER notched his 10th career postseason victory. Roethlisberger, who is in his seventh year, is one of only three quarterbacks (Pro Football Hall of Famer TROY AIKMAN and TOM BRADY) in NFL history to win at least 10 postseason games by the end of their seventh season.

“Ben does things that nobody else does,” says NFL Network analyst and Pro Football Hall of Famer MICHAEL IRVIN about Roethlisberger. “If you win Super Bowls, you belong among the best to ever play this game.”

Roethlisberger has already won two Super Bowls in his career and with a win on Sunday would join Pro Football Hall of Famers TERRY BRADSHAW (four), JOE MONTANA (four) and Aikman (three) and Brady (three) as the only starting quarterbacks in NFL history to win at least three Super Bowls.

Green Bay punched its ticket to North Texas with a 21-14 win at Soldier Field over the Chicago Bears. The defense led the way with three interceptions. Rookie cornerback SAM SHIELDS, an undrafted free agent, had two interceptions and a sack, becoming the first NFL rookie and the first Packer to record two interceptions and a sack in a playoff game. Defensive tackle B.J. RAJI added a key fourth-quarter interception that he returned 18 yards for a touchdown. Raji is the first defensive lineman in franchise history to return an interception for a touchdown in the postseason.

The Packers are the first No. 6 seed in the NFC to advance to the Super Bowl since the NFL instituted the current 12-team playoff format in 1990. The only other No. 6 seed to play in the Super Bowl was the 2005 Steelers, who went on to win Super Bowl XL.

Green Bay has not trailed by more than seven points in any game this season, the first team to accomplish the feat since the 1962 Detroit Lions.

“This team has great character,” says Packers quarterback AARON RODGERS, who has a 113.0 career postseason passer rating, the highest in NFL history (minimum 100 attempts). “If you look at the roster right now, there are a number of guys who were either not with us at the beginning of the season or were not counted on to play a big role. To have guys step up says a lot about our character. We just believe in each other.”

Pittsburgh head coach MIKE TOMLIN, who guided the Steelers to victory in Super Bowl XLIII, can become the first head coach in NFL history to win two Super Bowls in his first four seasons. He is also aiming to become the youngest head coach in league annals to win two Super Bowl titles (38 years old).

“It’s special,” says Tomlin about moving on to Super Bowl XLV. “There are 32 teams that start this journey and there are only two left. We are fortunate enough to be one of them. It’s awesome.”

On the opposite sideline will be Green Bay’s MIKE MC CARTHY, who grew up in Pittsburgh and spent four seasons at the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant coach.

“Pittsburgh is obviously a big part of who I am,” says McCarthy, who has guided the Packers to the playoffs in three of the past four seasons. “My family is still back there. This is going to be a very unique experience for everybody. I was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan growing up and they’re my second favorite team. But we’re preparing to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in a football game and that’s what we need to stay focused on.

“They’re an excellent football team, obviously. They’ve had a lot of success. They’re a veteran team and an experienced team. They’ve been through this experience before and we have not. We understand that. But we’re going to stick to our approach and that’s the way we’re going to face it. Our goal is to bring the Lombardi Trophy back home.”

Both teams can attribute some of their success this season to stellar defensive play. The Steelers, led by defensive coordinator and Pro Football Hall of Famer DICK LE BEAU topped the NFL allowing just 14.5 points per game. Green Bay defensive coordinator DOM CAPERS, who held the same title with the Steelers from 1992-94, and the Packers ranked second (15.0 points per game).

The two teams also ranked one-two in opponent passer rating (Green Bay 67.2, Pittsburgh 73.1) and sacks (Pittsburgh 48, Green Bay 47 – tied for second).

“I’ve got as much respect for Dick Lebeau as anybody in the business,” says Capers. “I consider him a good friend. We roomed together back in 1992 when BILL COWHER took the job and we worked there together for three years. Anybody who has been in the league for more than 50 years as a player and a coach has to have something special. I don’t think anybody can compare with him.”

These two talented defenses combined for seven Pro Bowl selections this year: linebacker JAMES HARRISON, defensive end BRETT KEISEL and safety TROY POLAMALU for Pittsburgh and safety NICK COLLINS, linebacker CLAY MATTHEWS and cornerbacks TRAMON WILLIAMS and CHARLES WOODSON for Green Bay.

“We’ve got a lot of talent on this team,” says Woodson. “Every week, it’s somebody else stepping up. The guys on this team have been making plays week in and week out. We have a ton of guys who can just make plays at any time and at any point in the game. We know how hard it is to get to the Super Bowl. You want to be able to get there and win it. It’s all or nothing now. Hopefully we can go down there and win it.”

How do I see this one playing out? Like it was a couple of seasons ago in Tampa when the Steelers beat the Cardinals, I expect Ben Roethlisberger to have this game in his hands in the final two minutes. I have wavered all week as to what team will win. I don't like the Steelers---never have, never will, but one can not ignore the fact that when Roethlisberger gets the ball in his hands late in the game, he usually comes through. He won't dazzle you with Brady or Manning like numbers, but he efficiently works his way down the field when it is needed. Can Green Bay's defence stop him? Will Aaron Rodgers remove the Brett Favre monkey from his back? Rodgers will play well, but it won't be enough because he won't have his hands on the ball last.

Pittsburgh 29 Green Bay 24. It hurt to type that! I hope I'm wrong!
-----
Imagine this? There will be more people inside Cowboys Stadium today than what the population of Green Bay, Wisconsin is.
----
Deion Sanders is going to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Remind me to pass that induction ceremony over. I can't stand hearing the man speak for 30 seconds-two minutes, much less the time it will take him in his speech. Some humility at the podium would be nice, but that would be asking for too much.
-----
Will this be the last NFL game we see in a while? I find it hard to believe that the world's most popular sports league would be stupid enough to allow a work stoppage.
-----
A story on ESPN suggests Jon Bon Jovi is about to buy some of the Atlanta Falcons. Does this mean that Mrs. Scruffy is about to change her allegiances. She's a Jets fan, but I'm sure she would have no problem changing bandwagons. I already know a Falcons fan, but he isn't one of those annoying fans like people I know that cheer for the Packers and Steelers (and yes, I am talking to you if you are reading this and you know me well), but still I don't need two Falcons fans in my life do I???
-----
One of the stumbling blocks is the unwillingness by some players to have an 18 game season. Do CFL players feel that way. They've been doing it for how long?
-----
Steve Simmons is reporting Andy Fantuz did not receive a huge signing bonus when he inked his contract with the Bears. Take that for what you will. Simmons also spoke with former CFL and current Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements this week. Clements says his personal highlight as a player was the touchdown pass to Tony Gabriel. I don't think I have to expand on that statement.
-----
Congrats to Trish Paulsen and her Saskatoon rink for winning the Canadian Junior Curling title last night. She stole 2 in 10 to beat Alberta and get the win. Braeden Moskowy of Regina gets his chance today to make it a Saskatchewan sweep. Here's hoping that gets done. I'm guessing not a lot (friends and family of the Moskowy rink excluded) will see his game seeing its on opposite of that big football game.
----
Congrats to La Ronge Ice Wolves forward Travis Eggum for getting his 50th goal last night in a win over Nipawin. Eggum becomes the first SJHL player since 2003 to score 50.
-----
Congrats to Melville Millionaires coach Jamie Fiesel for going national with his tirade Friday night. If any coach in the SJHL was going to do it, it would be Feez. That outburst was one for the ages and I'm sure will be replayed over and over. Eggum gets 50, but the SJHL gets recognized for a coaches tantrum on a national scale. Methinks the league needs a better communications person--- wait a minute!!!
-----
Enjoy the Super Bowl! Thoughts on it tonight or early tomorrow. I'll probably be Twittering throughout the game as well. I hope I get to see the American commercials.
