Rider Player Award Nominees Are.......

AND THE NOMINEES ARE….

The Saskatchewan Roughrider nominees for the CFL awards were announced today. This year’s nominees are: Darian Durant (Most Outstanding Player), Andy Fantuz (Outstanding Canadian), Jeremy O’Day (Outstanding Offensive Lineman), James Patrick (Outstanding Defensive Player), Shomari Williams (Outstanding Rookie) and Eddie Johnson (Outstanding Special Teams Player).

DARIAN DURANT
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER
Second nomination as Riders Most Outstanding Player…has completed 365 of 606 passes for 5,197 yards and 24 touchdowns…has started in all 17 regular season games this season…has also rushed 75 times for 602 yards and six touchdowns…the first Rider quarterback to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season since Kent Austin in 1993…was named CFL Offensive Player of the Week in week one and CFL Offensive Player of the Month in September…last Roughrider to win the award was Kerry Joseph in 2007.


ANDY FANTUZ
MOST OUTSTANDING CANADIAN
Second nomination as Roughriders Most Outstanding Canadian…has started all 17 regular season games at slotback…has recorded 82 receptions for 1,303 yards and five touchdowns…has recorded over 100-yards receiving in a game four times this season and once recorded over 200-yards receiving this season…was named CFL Canadian Player of the Week four times this season…was named CFL Canadian of the Month twice this season and was named CFL Offensive Player of the Week once…the last Rider to win Outstanding Canadian was Ray Elgaard in 1992.

JEREMY O’DAY
MOST OUTSTANDING OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
Third nomination as Riders Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman…has played in all 17 regular season games at centre…has been a division all-star five times and a CFL all-star three times in his career…last Roughrider to win this award was Gene Makowsky in 2004 and 2005.


JAMES PATRICK
MOST OUTSTANDING DEFENSIVE PLAYER
First nomination as Most Outstanding Defensive Player…has started 17 regular season games at safety…has recorded 64 defensive tackles, and a league leading nine interceptions this season…last Roughrider to win Outstanding Defensive Player was John Chick in 2009.


SHOMARI WILLIAMS
MOST OUTSTANDING ROOKIE
Has dressed in 17 regular season games this season and started two games at defensive end…has 15 defensive tackles, seven special teams tackles and one fumble recovery… last Roughrider to win Outstanding Rookie was Weston Dressler in 2008.


EDDIE JOHNSON
MOST OUTSTANDING SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER (JOHN AGRO AWARD)
First nomination as Riders Special Teams Player of the Year…has dressed in 13 regular season games…has 96 punts for 4,215 yards and 58 kick-offs for 3,851 yards…has also added 11 singles and two field goals…Corey Holmes won this award in 2002 and 2005.

I would have chosen Fantuz over Darian as MOP because of the way Darian has played over the last month. That's not a knock on him, its just reality.

This is the 3rd nomination for O'Day. I thought Makowsky had a lock on this for years.

Fantuz is a shoo-in for top Canuck. Other than that, I don't see any awards coming our way in Edmonton with the exception of that big trophy that the team will get on the Sunday.
