Indians Take Title

I've always said good pitching will beat good hitting in the playoffs, and that is what happened in the WMBL final. With a crowd of just over 600, including Rider coach Ken Miller, in attendance, the Red Sox fell 7-2 to Swift Current meaning the Indians win the league championship in a rain shortened best of 3 final in two straight.

How tight is the deadline for the kids to get back? Red Sox team manager, and all around good guy, Bernie Eiswirth said if Regina had forced a Game 3, there would have been no team windup because guys would fly out Monday morning to head back to their respective colleges. As I said in an earlier post, something has to be done to make sure there isn't so much of a time crunch. It was something that was brought up many times at the park last night.

Despite losing, the Red Sox still put on a very enjoyable brand of baseball in 2010. Rob Cherepuschak, Gary Brotzel, Eiswirth and everyone else connected with the organization did one helluva job this season. The only thing they didn't get was solid attendance and weather played a factor in that. Here's hoping the momentum the team picked up at the end of this season carries over into next.

I was shocked when I told Coach Miller at the baseball game that the Argos had a 14-0 Montreal lead. Once I saw the final, I told him if someone had told me at the start of the year that the Riders and Argos would have the same record 7 weeks in, that he wouldn't be a very popular man. The Argos are 5-2? They thumped Montreal and Montreal doesn't get thumped very often. Will people notice this in Toronto. Likely not! Hats off to Jim Barker and crew though for getting it done.

Rey Williams had four tackles in Pittsburgh's exhibition opener against Detroit. I saw him make one of those tackles. I didn't see how Stevie Baggs performed in Arizona's exhibition opener, but I didn't see his name in the stats either. Did he play?

Nick Watney has a three stroke lead going into the final round of the PGA championship. He has a three shot lead over Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson. I'll be interested to see how Johnson performs after he gagged on Sunday at the US Open when he was the 54 hole leader. When all is said and done, I think McIlroy takes it. I'm also thinking Jim Furyk will be there as well. I said yesterday how I thought Whistling Straits was one of the nastiest courses I had ever seen. If you are watching today, look at the camera angle from behind the 7th tee. That is the most intimidating Par 3 I have ever seen. There is no room for error and if you play like me, room for error is needed. Speaking of which, I have to get out on a course or two before August is over. I haven't played as much as I'd like to have this summer.

In five of baseball's six divisions, the gap between first and second place is no larger than 2 1/2 games. What a great final six weeks it is going to be.

I don't know what allowed the final hurdles to be cleared, but good on Ontario for allowing MMA. Its only a matter of time now until a UFC event is at Rogers Centre or the A-C-C. It sounds as if GSP will be headlining. It might be one of the most profitable events Dana White has put on.

SummerSlam goes today. If John Cena turns heel as I think he will, don't say I didn't tell you so. Team WWE also has an open spot on its roster today due to the "injury" suffered by the Great Khali. Who fills the spot? Triple H should be back soon shouldn't he???

From the WTF file, Chiefs wide receiver Chris Chambers filed 11 separate stalking complaints against a woman who he had been having an affair with before ending it. He has stopped filing those complaints. Why? He married the woman. Something tells me this one may not work.

It looks like its going to be a nice Sunday, so get out there and enjoy it.

I caught the 4th quarter of the Arizona game and saw Baggs play defensive end (#57). He seemed to be doing fine but did not get any tackles. The new Arizona play who was outstanding was rookie linebacker Daryl Washington. This player was flying around and had an amazing amount of tackles. It would appear that he will be the next defensive superstar in the NFL based on the comments of the broadcasters. Another former CFL player would did well was Martell Mallet. Today John Chick plays, game starts at 11 am and can be watched via channelsurfing.net for those without cable.

If no one sends me the score or details, what is one to do? Sorry!

Since you didn't mention it I will. Miller threw out first pitch and it was a strike. They should have brought him back out in the 3rd to face a hitter or two. HA HA!!

Great year by the Red Sox and you are right Mitch, I hope the momentum they built up this year continues into next.

Once again Toronto's special teams scored a TD. Mike O'Shea is the Argos' special teams co-ordinator. He was playing last year, so you know how much experience he has at coaching but I still wish Jim Daley would go to Toronto and spend his bye-week with Mike. Maybe Jim would learn something.

The WMBL while a great thing for the people in it's markets, is at the end of the day, a summer league. It is not the focal point of a college baseball player's year. There is no need to play up to 63 games in a summer league. If every team plays 40 or 42 games plus 2 rounds of 5 games in playoffs, you give yourself an extra week. This can be used if the league encounters weather issues, and if not used, gives the players an extra few days at home.

The WMBL is doing great things on the field, but it needs to respond and make some smarter decisions off the field in order to keep growing into a premier collegiate summer league.

Congrats to the Sox on a great season. There are alot of good people in that organization; here's hoping you can pick up where you left off this summer!
