Congi And Fantuz Get POTW Honours

Toronto -- Arland Bruce III, Chris Thompson, Luca Congi and Andy Fantuz were named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Players of the Week for week five, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Hamilton wide receiver Arland Bruce III had a career day in a 37-24 losing effort against the Roughriders this past weekend in Regina. Bruce tied the CFL record with 16 receptions and his 272 receiving yards placed sixth all-time for most ever in a single game.

The numbers posted by Bruce also set two new Ticats records for pass receiving, earning himself Gibson’s Finest CFL Offensive Player of the Week in the process. The outstanding performance was highlighted by two touchdown receptions, including a spectacular 36-yard catch and run that saw Bruce break a number of tackles before finding the endzone.

Bruce was a unanimous selection.

Chris Thompson played a key role in helping Edmonton win their first game of the 2010 season. The Esks defensive back intercepted Lions quarterback Travis Lulay twice and added two tackles in his team’s 28-25 victory.

The two interceptions were a career-high for Thompson, who now has an interception in four consecutive games. The second-year Eskimo is currently in his fourth CFL season.

Saskatchewan’s Lance Frazier was named the runner-up.

Meanwhile, Frazier’s teammate and Riders’ kicker Luca Congi scored 23 of the Riders 37 points in defeating the Ticats this week. Congi set a new career-high, going a perfect seven-for-seven with his right foot, coming just one shy of the CFL record for most field goals made in a single game.

The 23 points tallied by the Riders kicker equal a personal best and put him in a tie for most points scored by a CFL player this season. Congi also added two extra point converts in the winning effort.

Congi was a unanimous selection.

Slotback Andy Fantuz provided the spark which ignited the Riders offence en route to a 37-24 win over the Ticats this week. The University of Western Ontario alumni accumulated 100 yards on eight catches, reaching the 100-yard mark for the sixth time in his career.

Fantuz is currently in his fifth CFL season, all as a member of the Roughriders.

B.C.’s Davis Sanchez was named the runner-up.
