Baggs Gets Snubbed

Gibson's Finest CFL Players of the Week

Canadian Football League Week #2


Toronto, ON - (July 14, 2009) - DeAndra' Cobb, Siddeeq Shabazz, Larry Taylor and Brent Johnson were named the Gibson's Finest CFL Players of the Week for week two, the Canadian Football League announced today.

The four players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, now of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.


Gibson's Finest CFL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RB - DeAndra' Cobb - Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 31 @ B.C. Lions 28

Highlights / Key Stats:

Hamilton rookie DeAndra' Cobb was solid in his CFL debut, tallying a total of 175 yards on offence and scoring the game winning touchdown. Cobb hauled in a 48-yard pass from Quinton Porter in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lions 31-28, the Ticats first victory in B.C. since the 2004 season.

Cobb ran for 100 yards on 14 carries and caught five passes for 75 yards.

Gibson's Finest CFL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

LB - Siddeeq Shabazz - Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Calgary Stampeders 30 @ Winnipeg Blue Bombers 42

Highlights / Key Stats:

Siddeeq Shabazz had a huge game for the Bombers defence this week, delivering numerous big hits and a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Winnipeg linebacker racked up six tackles to go along with his interception in helping the Bombers earn a 42-30 victory over the defending Grey Cup Champion Calgary Stampeders.

Gibson's Finest CFL SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

KR - Larry Taylor - Montreal Alouettes

Edminton Eskimos 16 @ Montreal Alouettes 50

Highlights / Key Stats:

For the second week in a row the Gibson's Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week goes to an Alouette. Larry Taylor, the Als explosive return man, was once again a thorn in the Eskimos side. Taylor added a 68-yard punt return TD to the two he scored against the Eskimos in last year's Eastern Final. Taylor returned two kickoffs for 33 yards and six punts for 128 yards giving the Als excellent field position all game.

Gibson's Finest CFL CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DT - Brent Johnson - BC Lions

Hamilton Tiger-Cats 31 @ BC Lions 28


Highlights / Key Stats:

Defensive end Brent Johnson was a bright spot for the Lions in a losing effort this week. The Kingston, Ont. native led the way for the BC defence racking up four tackles and one sack as the Lions fell to the Ticats. Johnson is in his ninth season in the CFL.

When you look at the #'s and Shabazz did, it's hard to argue. It was a strong week for defensive players, and I think any other week, Baggs get at least honorable mention.

Baggs doesn't even get an honorable mention!! Credit to you though Mitch as you nailed both Cobb and Shabazz. Why aren't you picking the best Canadian or special teams player?
